Hello, my fellow Geeks! Free Comic Book Day 2019 is right around the corner! What’s Free Comic Book Day, you ask? Well, every year on the first Saturday in May, participating comic book stores around the globe give FREE comic books to every single person who comes into their shop. It’s basically a holiday for us comic book geeks. This year, Free Comic Book Day is on May 4th, 2019. Every year, I like to share with FCBD newbies that each comic shop who participates has a different limit on how many free comics you can take. It could be 3, 5, or as many as you like, so make sure to ask.
Free Comic Book Day 2019 Wish List
This year there are over 50 free comic books to choose from. Although, some comic shops include additional selections. I made my Free Comic Book Day 2019 Wish List, which includes 10 of my most anticipated FCBD comics!
Welcome to the Whedonverse – Boom! Studios
“The perfect jumping-on point for the Whedonverse with all new stories from the worlds of BOOM! Studios’ hit series Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Firefly.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of my favorite TV shows, and I’ve enjoyed reading the comic series by Dark Horse. Recently, Boom! Studios has revamped the BTVS comic series (pun intended). So far, I’ve enjoyed their fresh take on it, so I’m looking forward to reading this FCBD story. When it comes to Firefly, I don’t know anything about it. But, I know it was a television series that was gone too soon. I’m looking forward to diving into the world of Firefly. Maybe, it will intrigue me enough that I’ll finally watch the show.
Riverdale Season 3 – Archie Comics
“Micol Ostow (Riverdale: The Day Before) and Thomas Pitilli (Archie) bring fans into the world with a never-before-seen tale that presents all-new drama and intrigue set between episodes of the show!”
Archie was the first comic series I got into. When I was little, my mom used to buy me the digests whenever she’d go to Kmart. The Archie comics have left a lasting impression on me. As an adult, I still read Archie. Nowadays, the series has taken off in so many different directions, including a live-action TV show on The CW called, Riverdale. Soon after, another Archie comics series was created as a tie-in to the show. It’s cool to see how everything has come full circle since I was a kid reading the digests. In all of the Free Comic Book Days I’ve attended, an Archie comic is always included in the selection. This year, I’m looking forward to picking up a FCBD edition of Riverdale, which will feature a new story, and sneak peek of Scholastic’s Riverdale novels. I can’t wait!
Stranger Things & Black Hammer – Dark Horse
“In Stranger Things, Eleven and the Demogorgon have disappeared from Hawkins, IN. Steve and Nancy try to cheer Mike up, encouraging him to get the adventuring party back together again.”
I love Stranger Things and everything about it. The characters and the actors who play them are fantastic. The music, clothes, and references make me wish I lived through the 80s. But most importantly, the storyline never fails to entertain me, and keeps me wanting more. Which is why I’m glad Dark Horse has a Stranger Things comic series. I haven’t read it yet, but from what I can tell from flipping through it, it does the show justice. I’m excited to pick up the FCBD issue of Stranger Things. Hopefully, it will hold me over until season 3 premiers on Netflix on July 4th. Also included is a story from Black Hammer.
Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale – DC Comics
“When fifteen-year-old Selina Kyle becomes homeless, she must confront questions of who she is and who she will become.”
Lauren Myracle is one of my favorite authors! I grew up reading The Internet Girls series (TTYL, TTFN, etc.), and have read those books countless times. I also love DC. In particular, I’m a fan of Batman and all of his foes, such as Catwoman (aka Selena Kyle). So, I’m pretty excited to dig my claws into a new Catwoman story written by Lauren. I’ve never read a graphic novel by her, so I’m quite curious to read it. Fun fact, I actually got a digital advanced reader copy of Under the Same Moon from Netgalley. I’ll be reviewing it in the coming months. Since I only have the digital copy, it will be cool to have a hard copy too – even if it’s just a sneak preview. Also included is a sneak peek of Teen Titans: Raven, which is another graphic novel.
Casper’s Spooksville – American Mythology Productions
“Join Casper, Hot Stuff, Wendy, the Ghostly Trio, Spooky, Nightmare, and more as this all-star cast of characters tackle magical adventures and tickle your funny bone.”
Casper the friendly ghost, the friendliest ghost you know! As a child, I grew up watching all of the Casper movies and reading the comics. My favorite issues were ones that starred Wendy the Good Little Witch. In fact, one year for Halloween my mom made me a Wendy costume. It’s been super nostalgic reading about Casper, and his adventures in a new comic series, which came out last year. So, I’m looking forward to reading a new story about my favorite friendly ghost in the FCBD issue of Casper’s Spooksville! I’m happy a new generation of kids will get to read about Casper just as I did.
Spider-Man – Marvel Comics
“In a special FCBD story, creators Tom Taylor, Saladin Ahmed, and Cory Smith take these superstar heroes of the Spider-Verse in a shocking new direction, with a story that will build to one of Marvel’s most fantastic and epic tales later this year!”
Spider-Man is my favorite Marvel superhero. He has pretty badass powers that I wish I had. Compared to other heroes, Spider-Man is pretty normal. He’s not a billionaire, a spy, or a scientist. He’s Peter Parker, who’s like the boy-next-door (minus the web-slinging). When he’s not saving the city, he’s a teenager with normal teenage problems. It’s been exciting watching Spider-man grow from Peter Parker to a whole Spider-verse (Spider-Gwen, Miles Morales, Spider-Pig, etc.)! This FBCD edition of Spider-Man will include a new Spider-Verse story, as well as an original Venom story that “sets the stage for what will become one of the most fearsome events in the Marvel Universe.” I can’t wait to read it!
A Sheets Story – Lion Forge
“When Marjorie Glatt goes to her grandmother’s to celebrate Mother’s Day, Marjorie can think only of getting her ears pierced. All the girls in the seventh grade have their ears pierced. But Wendell, Marjorie’s ghost friend who roams the human world as a sheet, doesn’t want Marjorie to change herself just to fit in.”
I heard about Sheets not too long ago, and it’s been on my TBR ever since. From what I gather, it’s about a girl named Marjorie and a ghost boy named Wendell, who become friends. Sheets covers the topics of death and teenagehood. The illustration style looks very cute, but I imagine the story has a much more serious undertone. This FCBD edition of Sheets will include a new original story that takes place after the events of the graphic novel. Even though I haven’t read Sheets yet, I still plan on picking up this comic on Free Comic Book Day. Although now, I really want to read it.
Pokemon I Choose You & Pokemon Adventures – VIZ Media
“When Ash Ketchum oversleeps on his 10th birthday, he ends up with a stubborn Pikachu instead of the first partner Pokémon he wanted! But after a rocky start, Ash and Pikachu become close friends and true partners-and when they catch a rare glimpse of the Legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh in flight, they make plans to seek it out together.”
Okay, all of you Pokémon fans out there are going to hate me, but I’ve never been a huge fan of Pokémon. It’s not that I don’t like it, I’ve just never bothered to watch it more than a few times in my life. Although, I think the concept of it is pretty cool. So, you might be confused as to why I’d put it on my list as one of my most anticipated FCBD 2019 comics. I know, it’s weird because I’m not a fan, but the free preview caught my eye. From what I gather, the FCBD edition will include the story where Ash gets Pikachu for his 10th birthday instead of the Pokémon he wanted for his first partner. The comic will also include a story from the Pokémon Adventures series. That sounds like a good place to start!
Hope #1 – Source Point Press
“Unbeknownst to her husband and daughter, Julie Lavelle secretly moonlights as a beloved costumed “ultra” known to the public as Hope. However, when a family outing takes an unexpected turn, she quickly learns how everything can change in an instant.”
Naturally, I love me a good superhero comic. Especially ones that are original and not published by DC or Marvel. Of course, I’m not knocking those publishers. I love DC and Marvel just as much as the next comic book geek. I just find it refreshing to read a new series about a new superhero that I’ve never heard of in my life. Hope sounds really good! Honestly, I don’t know a lot of superheroes that have children, so it’s cool that Hope is a mom. I can’t wait to meet her in the full first issue!
Avengers – Marvel Comics
“FCBD AVENGERS #1 features a story by industry superstars Jason Aaron and Stefano Caselli that sets the stage of the main Avengers series just in time for Marvel’s highly anticipated movie Avengers: Endgame, while an all-new thrilling 10-page tale from Gerry Duggan and Mike Deodato creates one of the most unique, dynamic, and deadly versions of the Avengers ever- the Savage Avengers!”
Of course, what would Free Comic Book Day be without an Avengers comic? With the release of the highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame, I’m pumped to read some new stories about my favorite heroes. You just can’t go wrong.
See you on Free Comic Book Day
Now that you’ve seen my Free Comic Book Day 2019 Wish List, I hope you’ll head to your local comic shop on Saturday, May 4th for some free comics. It’s important to know that comics are much more than superheroes. Truly, there’s a comic book for everyone. Here are a few other free comics you might want to check out:
- Doctor Who: The 13th Doctor
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Casualty of War
- Bob’s Burgers
- Cristiano Ronaldo’s Striker Force 7
- Marge’s Little Lulu in The World’s Best Comic Book
- Lumberjanes: Shape of Friendship
- Minecraft (Also featuring: Disney Pixar Incredibles 2)
- My Hero Academia (Also featuring: The Promised Neverland)
- Star Wars Adventures: Droid Hunters
- The Tick
Besides getting free comics on Free Comic Book Day, I like to support my local comic book shops, and buy a comic or two (or ten) from them. If you’re new to comics, the people at your comic shop can help you find something you might like.

May 6, 2019 at 7:29 amRiverdale and Buffy are great ones! I was able to pick those up too. If you really want any of the comics you missed, a bunch of comic stores sell them online. I always get ones I missed or ones from previous years from Graham Cracker Comics or My Comic Shop. They’re not free, but they’re only $1.99. My boyfriend and I went to 3 comic shops. I wasn’t able to get Hope and Sheets, but my Dad was able to pick up Sheets for me. I ordered Hope online. So, I was able to get everything I wanted. Thanks for reading!❤️
