YES!!! Charmed FINALLY has its own subscription box! I must say, it’s about time. If you know me pretty well, you know that Charmed is my FAVORITE TV SHOW OF ALL TIME. I’m not even exaggerating.
For those who may not know, Charmed is a TV show about 3 sisters who discover they are witches – Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell. They fight against demons, warlocks, and other evil forces. The sisters are protectors of the innocent and are known as The Charmed Ones. In early October of 1998, Charmed aired on The WB (later known as The CW). The show ran for 8 seasons from 1998 to 2006. In 2018, Charmed celebrated its 20th anniversary.
A Charmed Super Fan
Since Charmed first aired, I’ve been a Super Fan. One night, while my mom was watching Charmed, I snuck into the living room, and began to watch it with her. I was only 6-years old, but I was hooked instantly. Incidentally, my mom caved, and let me watch it. Twenty year later, I’m still a Charmed Super Fan. Perhaps, more so now than ever.
Last year, my childhood dream finally came true! At Wizard World Chicago, I met Holly Marie Combs and Brian Krause (also known as Piper and Leo). Meeting my favorite TV show couple was so surreal. Sadly, the experience lasted only for a minute or so, and was it over before I knew it. However, it was one of the highlights of my life. At least, I have a photo to prove to myself I wasn’t dreaming. To hear more about my experience, check out my post: Wizard World Chicago 2018.
Anyhow, I could totally go on a rant about the amazing characters, and well-written storyline that is Charmed. But, not today. Hopefully, there will be a Charmed appreciation post in the near future. Let’s unbox the first ever Charmed subscription box, Charmed: Box of Shadows!
Charmed: Box of Shadows
When I found out there was going to be a Charmed subscription box, I pretty much died and went to heaven. Charmed: Box of Shadows was released just in time for Charmed’s 20th anniversary. Of course, it would have been a disgrace to the Charmed fandom if I didn’t subscribe.
Charmed: Box of Shadows is a quarterly subscription box curated by the ladies behind FanMail – Rose and Jenny. Each January, April, July, and October, subscribers will receive a box filled with exclusive Charmed goodies. The box may include: apparel, accessories, collectibles, jewelry, home goods, and more.
Over the years, I’ve collected quite a bit of Charmed merch. However, I never find Charmed merch at mainstream stores. Such as, HotTopic or BoxLunch. So, it’s amazing that every 3 months, I’ll receive the Charmed merch I’ve been wishing for. As well as, exclusive memorabilia that no one else will have – except subscribers.
Charmed: Box of Shadows has both a quarterly, and annual subscription plan. The Quarterly Plan is $49.99/box, and you’ll be charged every 3 months. The Annual Plan is one payment a year for 4 boxes at $44.99/box.
Charmed: 20 Years
The first Charmed: Box of Shadows was released last October. The theme is Charmed: 20 Years, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of the TV show’s first airing – October 7th 1998. The first box did not disappoint! The following items were inside:
- Bay Mirror Newsletter & Spoiler Card
- “I Am A Charmed One” Enamel Pin (FanMail) – Bonus Gift*
- 20 Years Charmed Heathered T-Shirt (The Shirt Factory) – $25 Value
- Spirit Board Enamel Pin with Moveable Planchette (FanMail) – $15 Value
- Halliwell Manor Miniatures: The Book of Shadows & The Attic Set (Tziporah Thompson) – $30 Value
- The Book of Shadows Leather Journal (FanMail) – $35 Value
- San Diego Comic Con Exclusive Charmed Comic, Issue #12C – Limited to 500 Copies (Zenescope) – Bonus Gift*
*I believe these were bonus gifts for the first 100 subscribers.
The Box
Since I was young, I’ve had a thing for creative packaging. That is to say, I’m definitely in love with the box design for Box of Shadows. It’s the freaking Book of Shadows! What’s more iconic than the Charmed Ones’ spell book? On the front of the box, Box of Shadows included the Charmed logo, and the Triquetra – the symbol that represents The Power of Three. In addition, the sides of the box have a paper like texture to make the box look like an actual spell book. I swear, I am keeping this box to store my Charmed goodies.
I really appreciate how Box of Shadows shipped the box. Most subscriptions don’t place their boxes in an envelope unlike Box of Shadows did. Not only does extra packaging protect the box, but it keeps it dirt free. Which is nice, since I’m planning on keeping it.
Bay Mirror Newsletter & Spoiler Card
You know you’ve got yourself a good subscription box, when it has a well-designed newsletter and/or spoiler card. Box of Shadows nailed it! First of all, their newsletter looks like The Bay Mirror, which is the San Francisco newspaper Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) works for. Which makes total sense, and looks super cute!
The date on the newsletter is Wednesday, October 7th 1998 – the day the first episode, “Something Wicca This Way Comes” aired. The big image on the front page is the iconic image of Shannon Doherty (Prue), Holly Marie Combs (Piper), and Alyssa Milano (Phoebe) from the first season.
Inside the newsletter, you’ll meet the team behind FanMail and Box of Shadows – Jenny and Rose. In addition, the newsletter talks about the items included in the box. As well as, an “Ask Phoebe” column, and a list of upcoming events in the Charmed community. It’s a fun little read to introduce the first box. I’m looking forward to reading future newsletters.
“I Am A Charmed One” Enamel Pin (FanMail)
Surprisingly, I received the “I Am A Charmed One” enamel pin. In fact, only the first 100 subscribers received it as a bonus gift. I love collecting enamel pins of all my favorite fandoms, but I’ve never had a Charmed one. Therefore, I was pretty stoked to add this lovely purple and gold typographic pin to my collection.
20 Years Charmed Heathered T-Shirt (The Shirt Factory) – $25 value
Notably, during my 20 years as a Charmed fan, I’ve only owned 1 Charmed t-shirt. It’s the coolest shirt ever with the whole cast on it. Unfortunately, it was a couple sizes too big. A week or two before Wizard World Chicago, I searched and searched the internet for a Charmed t-shirt. But, I couldn’t find any officially licensed t-shirts. Apparently, BoxLunch used to carry one. However, they don’t sell them anymore.
Box of Shadows answered my prayers and included a Charmed 20th anniversary t-shirt in the first box. It’s made of a super comfy purple fabric, which matches the enamel pin perfectly. I can’t wait to wear it at the next comic con I attend. I hope Box of Shadows includes more clothing items in future boxes.
Spirit Board Enamel Pin with Moveable Planchette (FanMail) – $15 Value
On Box of Shadows’ Instagram, they teased that there was going to be some kind of spirit board related item included in the first box. The item is… a spirit board enamel pin! The pointer or “planchette” moves along a slot on the pin, which is the coolest thing ever. This is one time it’s actually okay to “push the pointer”.
The spirit board is super iconic in Charmed. Patty Halliwell left the spirit board to her daughters when she died. In the first episode, the spirit board leads Phoebe to the Books of Shadows, which gives the sisters their powers. For someone who didn’t have any Charmed enamel pins, I now have two! Thank you, Box of Shadows!
Halliwell Manor Miniatures: The Book of Shadows & The Attic Set (Tziporah Thompson) – $30 Value
From here on out, every Box of Shadows will include a room, character, or some sort of display from the Halliwell Manor Miniatures collection. The first one subscribers received was the attic. The attic is home to The Book of Shadows. A miniature Book of Shadows on a stand was inside the box as well. Artist, Tziporah Thompson designed both acrylic displays.
I’m looking forward to seeing what displays future boxes will have. Eventually, I hope we get all of the rooms to build our very own Halliwell manor. That would be awesome! I am extremely curios to see what the character miniatures will look like. I guess we will just have to wait and see…
The Book of Shadows Leather Journal (FanMail) – $35 Value
My dream Charmed prop to own would be a replica of The Book of Shadows. To my surprise, Box of Shadows included a Book of Shadows Leather Journal in their first box. The journal is absolutely stunning! It’s handcrafted with a built-in bookmark, and smells so good! I love the smell of leather.
Although, the journal isn’t an exact replica, it is a great Charmed prop. Naturally, the triquetra is on the cover. Inside, the journal features a few replica spells, which is a nice touch. For those reasons, I am blown away that Box of Shadows included such a beautifully hand-crafted item in their box. For the quality you’re getting, the journal is certainly worth way more than its $35 value.
San Diego Comic Con Exclusive Charmed Comic, Issue #12C – Limited to 500 Copies (Zenescope) – Bonus Gift
For those who don’t know, Zenescope Entertainment came out with the first ever Charmed comic series in June of 2010. The comic series was a continuation of the series 18 months after the events of the series finale. Until the series ended in September of 2016, Charmed comics were published monthly. The series ran for 2 seasons: Season 9 and Season 10.
In March of 2017, Dynamite published a short-lived Charmed comic series with no relation to Zenescope’s storyline. The Dynamite series was titled, “A Thousand Deaths”. Dynamite’s take on the series is set during the TV show – sometime between season 4 and 8. Unfortunately, after 5 issues, the series ended in July of 2017.
Generously, Box of Shadows included in my box a San Diego Comic Con exclusive Charmed comic. If I had to guess, the comic is another bonus gift first 100 subscribers. The comic is Season 9, Issue #12 from the Zenescope series. The cover is what makes the comic exclusive. On the cover, Piper, Phoebe, and Paige are dressed up as superheroes from the episode, “Witches in Tights” (Season5, Episode 5). Behind them is a San Diego Comic Con backdrop, as if they are cosplaying at the convention.
I’ve read most of the Zenescope series, so this comic is definitely more of a collector’s item for me. According to my research, there are only 500 copies of this variant. As a comic book collector, I’m geeking out hardcore!
Unfortunately, newbies to the series will be starting on issue #12 instead of #1. But, there are plenty of places to buy single issues or trades to help new readers start from the beginning:
Without a doubt, I highly recommend the Charmed comics because they’re a lot of fun. Although, you have to keep an open-mind that the comics are a little different than the TV show that we know and love. Please let me know in the comments, if you’ve read the Charmed comics, and what you think about them.
January Theme – Halliwell Hearth & Home
The theme for the January is Halliwell Hearth & Home. We can assume, the items included will be related to the Halliwell manor or home décor.
Box of Shadows is now accepting subscribers to Charmed: Box of Shadows for their January box on their website!
Charmed: Box of Shadows – October 2018 Review
The first Box of Shadows was AH-MAZING! Above all, the box included items that I’ve been searching years for. Such as, the enamel pins, and t-shirt. Undoubtedly, I love that each box includes both exclusive and handcrafted items. Such as, the Book of Shadows journal, and the Halliwell Manor Miniatures. My favorite item? Wow, that’s a tough choice. Overall, I think my favorite item would have to be the Book of Shadows journal. The journal is so beautiful, and well-crafted. For certain, it’s worth way more than I paid for.
On the whole, I think Charmed: Box of Shadows really captured the essence of Charmed, and was a great gift to the fans for Charmed’s 20th anniversary. Thank you, Box of Shadows! I’m really looking forward to receiving the January box, and unboxing more magical goodies!
What’s your favorite Charmed item from the first Box of Shadows?
I hope to see you in my next blog post! Blessed Be!

March 6, 2019 at 1:43 pmI haven’t seen Charmed in years. It’s a show I’ve always wanted to binge through as an adult, maybe it’s about time I did because this box of goodies looks awesome. I absolutely love the spirit board pin. I even love the box it all came in – such a clever idea.

March 6, 2019 at 5:54 pmYou should totally rewatch Charmed! I’ve watched it so many times throughout my life. But, of course it’s most relatable when you’re an adult. Netflix has the whole series, but unfortunately they lost the rights to the theme song and many of the songs. I love the music from Charmed, that matters to me. Lol. If you care about that kind of stuff, I highly recommend getting the original box sets. You can get them so cheap now. I love Box of Shadows! They’ve done a great job curating the box. As a hardcore Charmed fan, I’m not disappointed one bit. Thanks for reading!💕

February 4, 2019 at 6:55 pmI remember buying the charmed book for my older sister a few years ago she even had every season on dvd and would watch them back to back all the time. She would even look in the book and find spells and laugh at them and I spent over $20.00 for the book for her brand new my mother said I was nuts to spend $20.00 on a book like that I told her “Well she wants it so I got it for her. Oh well!” She always loved them kind of shows.
