“You are the plucky but penniless heroine in the center of eighteenth-century society, courtship season has begun, and your future is at hand. Will you flip forward fetchingly to find love with the bantering baronet Sir Benedict Granville? Or turn the page to true love with the hardworking, horse-loving highlander Captain Angus MacTaggart? Or perhaps race through the chapters chasing a good (and arousing) man gone mad, bad, and scandalous to know, Lord Garraway Craven? Or read on recklessly and take to the Continent as the “traveling companion” of the spirited and adventuresome Lady Evangeline? Or yet some other intriguing fate? Make choices, turn pages, and discover all the daring delights of the multiple (and intertwining!) storylines. And in every path you pick, beguiling illustrations bring all the lust and love to life.” – My Lady’s Choosing
Do you remember reading those Choose Your Own Adventure (1979-1998) books when you were a kid? Choose Your Own Adventure is an interactive series of children’s books in which the reader assumes the role of the protagonist and makes choices that determine the direction of the story. What if I told you that there was a new interactive reading experience for adults? My Lady’s Choosing by Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris is an interactive romance novel, where you assume the role of a lady of the eighteenth-century, who has caught the eye of several suitors. As the protagonist, it is your choice to decide whom you want to give your heart to, and what adventures you will embark on.
There are so many elements that I loved from My Lady’s Choosing. I want to share what I think makes this book a unique read as well as an overall unique reading experience, and why you need to pick it up. My Lady’s Choosing was just released on April 3, 2018, so pick your copy up in-store and online today.
It All Starts With The Cover
I know you’re not supposed to judge a book by its’ cover, but can we talk about how amazing the cover for My Lady’s Choosing is?! As a Graphic Designer and Book Nerd, I’m in love with the color palette, font, illustrations, and overall aesthetic of the cover. The cover is so pleasing to the eye that I was immediately drawn to it.
Introducing the Bachelors…and Bachelorette?
In My Lady’s Choosing you are introduced to 4 possible love matches:
Sir Benedict Granville – Baronet, and well-off relative of Lady Craven. He is witty, and banter is his weapon of choice.
Captain Angus “Mac” MacTaggart – Rugged Scotsman, Good Samaritan, and a ginger. He spends his days caring for the orphans and widows of recent wars.
Lord Garraway Craven – Lady Craven’s Son, and Master of Hopesend Manor. He’s a widower, and has one son. He is prone to rages, and prolonged unexplained absences.
Lady Evangeline Youngblood – Free-spirited Woman, and your very best friend. Her aunt is Lady Aurelia Craven. Scandal attends her every move.
My Lady’s Choosing has a diverse group of love matches to choose from. I love that there are male love matches, as well as a female one. Whether you are straight or a part of the LGBTQ+ community, there is a love match for any reader, which is totally awesome! Depending on the choices you make, you might discover other possible love matches on your quest for romance.
Chick Lit Meets Historical Fiction Meets Satire
Now, let me be honest with you: I don’t typically pick up historical fiction, however I’m a sucker for a good love story. I loved that My Lady’s Choosing dipped her toe into a bunch of different genres: Historical Fiction, Chick Lit, and Satire.
Chick Lit: First and foremost, this book contains stories of love and…lust. The best part is you are the leading lady of your own love story. It’s up to you whom you love and who’s your lover.
Historical Fiction: Second, the book is set in the eighteenth century, and the language used throughout feels true to the time period. Although for humorous purposes, modern language is sprinkled throughout. I’m not going to lie; I had way too much fun reading this book in an English accent. You should try it – it really adds to the experience!
Satire: Third, the story and language goes in a very satirical direction. I like to think of My Lady’s Choosing as Harlequin Romance novel meets satire. It’s so cheeky, fun, and full of many innuendos. I love it! The funniest bits had to be The Choices at the bottom on the page. For example,
“Are you a lover, not a fighter? Does seducing your way out of this scrape, and getting your jollies off while doing so, sound appealing? If so, turn to page 346, you hussy you. Are you a fighter, not a lover? Does seducing your captor sound a bit too dicey, and would you rather solve this issue using a sharp rock and violence? If so, turn to page 105 (and try not to stab anyone on the way).” (292)
Flow of the Story
Another thing I really enjoyed about My Lady’s Choosing was the flow and length of the stories. First, I love that you can change your fate at any point in the story. Say you experience love and lust with Captain Angus MacTaggart and in the end realize he really isn’t the one for you. Well, you can make the choice to not marry him and find new romance and adventures with Sir Benedict Granville (or another lover of your choosing) instead with just a few page flips.
Second, during the first “adventure” I went on, I was curious to know how long my story would be. Even though the book is 351 pages long, the stories I’ve read so far are around 20-40 pages each. Ultimately, the length of your story depends on the romance and adventure you desire.
Adult Content
I believe this book is best suited for ages 16+ because it contains R-Rated sexual content. For instance, during your romantic conquest, you are given the option to live out your sexual fantasies with your love interest of choice. However, the language used to describe your “sexy time” with your lover is done quite tastefully. This book has a touch of erotica, but uses innuendos and humor to make light of it. However, like in real life you are given the choice to give in to your sexual desires or not.
My Lady’s Choosing Should Be Your Next Read
Overall, I really enjoyed reading My Lady’s Choosing. I would describe this book as an entertaining read. I thought the language, historical time period, and satirical elements were a lot of fun. The individual plots are quick and to the point, but that’s what I expected from a book with a Choose Your Own Adventure format. Although, there were some plot twists in each story that I didn’t see coming. I know I only skimmed the surface with the plot possibilities, so I’m looking forward to reading more. The characters aren’t super developed, but all of the love matches are distinguishable from one another. Due to the pace of the novel, character development wasn’t super important to me.
My expectation for My Lady’s Choosing was entertainment, and Kitty, and Larissa truly delivered. I thought a Choose Your Own Adventure novel for adults was a fantastic idea. Kitty, and Larissa always come up new and unique concepts for books, and I’m very excited to see what books they publish in the future. Thank you Larissa for helping me get in touch with NetGalley to get the chance to read this advanced copy of My Lady’s Choosing. I really enjoyed reading it, and I know other romantic saps at heart will too!
If you’ve read My Lady’s Choosing, what did you think of it? Which suitor did YOU choose? In case you were wondering, I chose Mac the first time around. I’m a sucker for a guy who’s good with kids! If you’d like to see what other books I’m reading these days, follow me on Goodreads!
